It's Stuck & Upside-Down

Jan 2, 2012
Excited and ready to have my IUD removed, Calin & I arrive bright and early to the University of Utah hospital. With hardly any wait and a $0.00 co-pay, I meet with my new OB-GYN, Dr. Parrett. She tells me taking out the IUD will be faster and less painful than when it was put in, yay!

After 20 minutes of only slight discomfort, Dr. Parrett announces she'll be right back. Entering with another Dr to assist I started to realize that this wasn't going to be faster or less painful than putting it in. My slight discomfort turned quickly into toe clenching pain. They couldn't find the IUD...

Again, Dr. Parrett announced she'd be right back. Next step, use an ultrasound to find the little bugger.

Well, they found it but couldn't reach the strings. To help the pain I was given a few shots of numbing medicine up in my lady business-ouch! The pain didn't numb. To help distract my mind I tried to recite the National Anthem silently. I am ashamed to declare that I don't remember all the words.

My sweet Dr. kept reminding me that anytime I needed a break from the pain I should let her know. Not wanting to delay the removal process I chose not to ask for any breaks. I was worried that if I asked for a break at the same moment they could reach the IUD, the process would have to start all over again.

Finally I couldn't take the pain any more and I asked for a break. During the break, the two Dr.s conversed and decided I needed to have my IUD surgically removed because it was embedded into the wall of my uterus.

I didn't cry the entire time I was in that small procedure room until I heard the words, "You need surgery."

*side note: The IUD flipping and twisting itself inside my uterus was a very rare situation (according to The University of Utah Hospital).
